Acosta-Mills 1968 Z/28 Camaro
This 1968 Z/28 Camaro was ordered from Chevy Chase Chevrolet by Hernando Acosta on December 2, 1967, and received on January 16, 1968. Hernando was an employee of Chevy Chase Chevrolet (Bethesda, MD), and because of this, even received a $450.45 discount off the full $3577.45 invoice cost of this vehicle. This Camaro was ordered in "Fathom Blue," and continues to run this paint color today.
All of the original order details and historical paperwork (dealer order, dealer invoice and even the Manufacturer's Statement of Origin/MSO, DMV registration, etc.) are included with the sale of this Camaro.
Hernando began running the car in regional SCCA events in 1968, many of which were at Marlboro Motor Raceway (Maryland). The Camaro was classified in A-Sedan, and Hernando had some good results, even victories in this car. The 1st place achieved in the November 23, 1969, "Turkey Bowl" at Marlboro is even represented in the wonderful Bill Dobbins photo that can be seen on this page. Hernando's success was even more impressive given how gentle he was on the car. Hernando exhibited such care because he didn't have the disposable income required to fix expensive damages caused by more aggressive driving.
Doug Mills purchased this car in 1971. Doug participated in Maryland and Pennsylvania SCCA A-Sedan races and hillclimbs. In 1972 and 1973, Doug won several SCCA events, and set the A-Sedan lap record at Summit Point, WV. Doug's 1973 SCCA A-Sedan efforts in this car qualified him for the SCCA American Road Racing Championships (called the Champion Spark Plug Road Racing Classic/CSPRRC in 1973), and today referred to as "the Runoffs." In 1972 and 1973 Doug Mills also won eleven out of eleven hillclimbs, setting overall fast time twice and setting eight A-Sedan records.
This car has been given a Certificate of HTAR Membership (Historic Trans-Am and A-sedan Registry) by David Tom's Historic Trans-Am Registry (registry# TA-037). Though the provided tag references the Trans-Am series, this car has not been found to have raced in any SCCA Trans-Am events. It was verified and registered with it's SCCA A-Sedan history. This car also comes with a full Vintage SCCA and HMSA log book. This car's last event was at Sears Point/Infineon in 2010 (Vintage SCCA), where it took second overall, and first amongst all other production-based vehicles.
Complete ownership records have been aquired from 1968 to present... even the DMV research paperwork that was received many years ago to further verify this Z/28 Camaro's provenance accompanies any sale.
And speaking of DMV details, this car has a valid title, and was even road registered as late as 1992. This Camaro could be made street ready and registered, if desired, as it still has full working head and marker lights, still controlled by the factory dash switch, the original ignition switch and key, trunk lock and key are all still fully operable. The original dash and the upper metal near the rear quarter panels all still carry the original and nicely preserved "medium blue" paint.
This Camaro has a well-built 302 with period correct straight plug heads (1968 date code, part# 3917291) which are fully ported by Gromm Racing Heads, in San Jose, CA. The motor has a period correct, factory 4-barrel aluminum intake (part# 3917610), topped by a race prepped Holley carburetor, all force fed air though an original style cowl plenum air cleaner.
The motor is built to be west-coast Historic Trans-Am/HMSA legal, which means it should be accepted in just about any vintage racing organization. Please be in touch for even more details on this engine.
This Camaro has four-wheel disc brakes with the period correct JL8 style front brackets and Corvette calipers.
The 12 bolt differential housing in this Camaro is believed to be the original provided with the car, given it's date code. This rearend/diff isequipped with positraction and 4.56 gears.
Muncie 4-speed transmission, with a Hurst Competition Plus shifter and reverse lock out provision. A RAM triple disc clutch is actuated by a factory style bellcrank and throw-out bearing.
This Camaro's original cowl tag and hidden VINs have all been checked and verified against the orignal paperwork.
